On February 10, I celebrated a milestone—15 years as a Virtual Assistant. Looking back, it’s been a journey of growth, adaptation, and building strong relationships, especially in the medical industry, where 99% of my clients have been Medical Doctors.
When I started in 2010, remote work was still an emerging concept. But I took a leap of faith, and over the years, I’ve evolved alongside the industry, learning new skills, working with amazing clients, and helping businesses streamline their operations.
Here’s a look at my journey and the biggest lessons I’ve learned along the way..
2010: The Beginning – My First VA Role
My virtual career began with Remote Staff Australia as an MYOB Bookkeeper. It was my first introduction to remote work, and I quickly realized the value of providing organized, efficient support to businesses.
2011: Joining Elance & Expanding My Skills
A year later, I transitioned to Elance, where I expanded my role beyond bookkeeping. I began assisting clients with administrative work, customer support, and project management, gaining a deeper understanding of what businesses needed from a VA.
Upwork & Building My Own Agency
As Elance merged with Upwork, I continued to develop my career and created my own Upwork agency. This allowed me to work with multiple clients, manage a team, and offer a wider range of services.
2017: Co-Founding a Virtual Assistant Team
Recognizing the growing demand for VAs, I co-founded a Virtual Assistant team with fellow VAs. This step solidified my role as not just a service provider, but a leader in the industry—mentoring other VAs and helping businesses scale.
Specializing in the Medical Industry
Over the years, 99% of my clients have been Medical Doctors. I’ve supported healthcare professionals with essential tasks such as:
✔️ Appointment reminders & scheduling
✔️ Website updates & management
✔️ Content creation (blogs, newsletters, social media, video editing)
✔️ Administrative support & research
Adapting to the Changing Digital Landscape
As businesses embraced digital transformation, I adapted by learning new tools and skills, from social media management to video editing, blogging, and research. Staying ahead of trends has been key to providing real value to my clients.
Balancing Multiple Clients & Time Zones
Managing clients across different time zones has become second nature. My typical day follows Texas time in the evening for appointment-related tasks, followed by project-based work during the day, assisting multiple clients with their unique needs.
Lessons Learned in 14 Years as a VA
1️⃣ Adaptability is everything – Technology and business needs change constantly. Staying relevant means continuously learning.
2️⃣ Communication is key – Clear and proactive communication with clients leads to smoother projects and long-term relationships.
3️⃣ Delegation isn’t just for clients – Even as a VA, I’ve learned when to automate or outsource tasks for efficiency.
4️⃣ Relationships matter – Long-term success is built on trust, consistency, and delivering real value.
The Future of Virtual Assistance
The VA industry has grown tremendously, and with AI, automation, and remote work becoming the norm, the demand for skilled VAs will only increase. Today, businesses recognize that a VA is not just an admin assistant—we’re strategic partners in their success.
For me, this journey is far from over. I’m excited for what’s ahead and look forward to continuing to help businesses and medical professionals thrive.
From 2010 to today, my VA journey has been one of transformation, resilience, and impact. Every project and every client has shaped who I am today.
